In June 2019, I was approached with an enterprise-level opportunity: the IBM Institute for Business Value (IBV) urgently needed to revamp their digital campaign operations. Promoting world-class thought leadership reports was central to their marketing strategy, but technical rendering issues were undermining their reach. The stakes became critical when a major campaign broke in CEO Ginni Rometty’s email client, making flawless, cross-platform performance the top priority.

Leveraging my history of hand-coding responsive HTML through tough rendering constraints like Lotus Notes, I stepped in to lead the technical transformation. I set out to solve their immediate deliverability challenges while positioning the IBV as the pioneer for IBM’s newly released corporate email design system.

To achieve zero-defect deployments, I overhauled our production workflows:

  • Platform Optimization: I transitioned production to Acoustic (formerly Watson Customer Engagement), unlocking real-world testing capabilities, A/B testing frameworks, and click-through heatmaps that were previously unavailable.

  • Rigorous QA Governance: I integrated Email on Acid into our deployment cycle, testing code across 150+ simulated email clients to catch and resolve rendering bugs long before send time.

  • Design Standardization: I eliminated fragmented layouts by building standardized, accessible template modules aligned with IBM’s modern brand standards.

By bridging complex HTML engineering with strategic design standards, I transformed the IBV’s email pipeline from a high-risk technical bottleneck into a reliable, high-performing global engagement channel.
